How nutrition becomes a biological signal — not simply a source of calories.
Food is not simply fuel.
It is tempting to think of food as a number — calories in, energy out. That model is not wrong so much as incomplete. Food does two things at once: it provides energy, and it provides information.
Every meal is a set of instructions. It moves insulin, it signals whether muscle is being built or broken down, it raises or settles the body's inflammatory tone, and it feeds — or starves — the microbial community in the gut. Two meals with identical calories can send very different instructions.
This is the first shift, and the rest of this resource depends on it: nutrition quality matters independently of calorie count, because the signal a meal carries is not captured by its energy alone.
The question is not only how much am I eating, but what am I repeatedly telling my biology to do.
The first variable is quality — not the perfect ratio.
Before protein grams, before carbohydrate timing, before any refinement, there is one variable that shapes all the others: the quality of the food itself. Minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods and ultra-processed foods behave differently in the body — and not only because of what they contain, but because of how they are structured.
The intact structure of a food — its matrix — changes how quickly it is digested, how full it makes you, and how its nutrients are absorbed. Whole foods tend to arrive with fibre, water and structure intact; heavily processed foods tend to arrive pre-broken-down, energy-dense and easy to over-consume.
This is not a moral distinction. There is no forbidden food and no magic one. It is a question of what most of your intake is built from, because quality is the foundation on which protein, fat and carbohydrate are actually used.
Protein becomes more important with age, not less.
Protein is the raw material the body uses to maintain muscle — and muscle is not merely about strength or appearance. It is a primary site where glucose is cleared from the blood, and it is the tissue most responsible for staying independent and resilient over a lifetime.
With age, the body becomes less efficient at converting dietary protein into muscle — a phenomenon called anabolic resistance. The same meal produces a smaller building signal than it once did. This is precisely why adequate protein, distributed across the day rather than concentrated in a single sitting, matters more as the years pass, especially when paired with resistance training.
How much protein a given person needs is not a universal figure. It reflects body composition, activity, age and goals. And the old rule that the body can only "use" twenty-five to thirty-five grams at a time is not supported by current evidence — it is not part of how this practice reasons.
Carbohydrate is not the problem. Context is the variable.
Two claims are equally simplistic: that carbohydrates are inherently harmful, and that they are always healthy. Neither survives contact with physiology. Carbohydrate is not the problem — context is. What a given amount of carbohydrate does in the body depends on the food it arrives in, the metabolic health of the person eating it, how active they are, and when it arrives.
Training changes that context in a specific, well-understood way. Working muscle draws glucose from the blood and draws down its stored glycogen, and after training — particularly resistance or higher-volume sessions — that muscle carries a raised demand for glucose disposal and glycogen restoration. The body receiving carbohydrate after a demanding session is not the same body receiving it at rest.
This is why the María López approach uses carbohydrate strategically rather than distributing it across the day simply because a certain hour has arrived. When carbohydrate is appropriate for a person at all, weighting more of it toward periods of real physical demand — around and after training — is often a sensible way to position it. This is a matter of emphasis, not a rule: there is no narrow window to catch, carbohydrate after training is not mandatory, and not everyone needs to think about timing at all.
Metabolic health sets the rest. A highly active, insulin-sensitive person handles carbohydrate very differently from someone with insulin resistance, lower activity, or different body-composition goals — and their strategy should differ accordingly. This is what metabolic flexibility describes: the capacity to move smoothly between carbohydrate and fat for fuel. It is also why this practice prescribes no universal carbohydrate schedule. Outside the contexts where carbohydrate earns its place, there is no need to add it deliberately because of the clock — and no need to fear it either.
Fat is structural before it is fuel.
Dietary fat is easy to caricature. In the body it is quietly essential: it forms the membranes of every cell, it is required to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, and it supplies the essential fatty acids the body cannot make itself.
The useful distinction is one of type, not fear. Predominantly unsaturated sources — olive oil, nuts, seeds, oily fish — sit well within a cardiovascular-protective pattern of eating. Omega-3-rich foods, in particular, support cardiovascular and inflammatory balance.
The evidence here rewards food over pharmacology: the benefit associated with omega-3-rich foods is more consistent than the mixed results seen with omega-3 supplements. This resource is about the pattern of eating, not a capsule.
Fibre feeds a system you don't see.
Fibre is one of the most consistently beneficial and most under-consumed parts of the diet. It slows the rise of glucose after a meal, it supports satiety, and it is the primary food for the community of microbes in the gut — which in turn is linked to cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Diversity matters as much as quantity. A wider range of plants tends to support a wider range of microbes. The point is not a single "gut-healing" food but a varied, plant-rich pattern sustained over time.
It is worth being sober here: the microbiome is real and it matters, but it is best understood as something shaped by diet, sleep, stress and movement — not a machine to be hacked with one product. The most reliable way to support it is upstream.
Water is a quiet variable that touches everything.
Hydration rarely makes headlines, yet nearly every physiological process assumes it. Even mild shortfalls can dull concentration and reduce physical performance, and consistent intake supports kidney function and overall physiological work.
The useful version of this is unglamorous: drink water consistently through the day, and let thirst and the colour of your urine be reasonable guides. There is no need for elaborate electrolyte formulas or "detox" waters — the body already clears itself continuously through the kidneys and liver.
When you eat is part of what you eat.
Nutrition is not only what. It is also when, how often, and in what context. The body's clock changes how a meal is handled: glucose tolerance tends to be higher earlier in the day and lower late at night, which is why a large, late meal lands differently from the same meal eaten earlier.
Regular, reasonably-timed meals reinforce the same circadian rhythms that govern sleep and metabolism. That is the signal worth sending — regularity and a slight weighting toward earlier in the day.
What this is not is a fasting protocol. Where time-restricted eating helps, much of the benefit appears to come from eating less overall and aligning with the body clock, rather than from the clock window itself. Timing is a useful variable to hold lightly — not the centre of the strategy.
Two people can eat the same meal and respond differently.
This is the point at which general education becomes personal. Give two people an identical meal and their bodies can respond differently — different glucose curves, different fullness, different recovery. The food did not change; the biology receiving it did.
That is why a single nutritional prescription applied identically to everyone is the wrong tool. A strategy worth following bends around age, sex, body composition, physical activity, metabolic health, goals, preferences, lifestyle and clinical context.
Personalization, here, does not mean a gadget or a fashionable test. It means clinical reasoning applied to a specific person — which is exactly where the foundations end and a personal strategy begins.
Optimization comes last — for a reason.
Most nutrition confusion comes from arguing about the top of the hierarchy while ignoring the base. The order below is how this practice prioritises. Each level is built on the one beneath it, and refinements at the top mean little if the foundation is missing.
Credibility means naming the limits.
Nutrition is powerful, and it is not magic. The difference between a serious longevity practice and a wellness trend is the willingness to say clearly where the evidence ends.

Nutrition improves the conditions in which you age well. That is a strong claim — and a different claim from promising more years.
What to actually do with this.
Not "ten foods to eat." A short set of principles that hold up regardless of the diet of the moment:
Nutrition is a system you observe and adapt — not a fixed prescription.
The method is the same one that runs through everything in this practice: understand the biology, interpret it for the individual, personalize the strategy, implement it consistently, and review as the body responds.
Perfection is never the objective. Consistency is. A nutrition strategy built around trends will always be replaced by the next trend. A strategy built around your biology can keep improving.
Your nutrition strategy should not be built around trends. It should be built around your biology.
Your biology deserves more than a generic nutrition plan.
